Patricia Austin Jewelry Designs
Patricia works in a "soft glass" called Moretti or Effetre. This glass is hand-made in Murano, Italy. She often combines precious metal (gold, silver, palladium) enamels and frit into the design of a bead. She also decorates her beads with "twisties" which are made from a number of different glasses, melted then pulled and twisted into a candy cane pattern. In order to make a bead, you must first dip a stainless stell mandrel in a substance called "bead release". This allows you to make the bead on the mandrel in the hot torch. Once your bead is made and decorated, you transfer the bead directly to a temperature controlled kiln. This holds the bead at what is called "annealing temperature" for a set amount of time, then begins to slowly cool the bead so it won't crack. All Patricia's beads are annealed this way to prevent stress cracks that can happen in glass.
